A New Age of Exploration Dawns

Port Opulenza, Paulovia (GP) - His Royal Majesty, currently on a State Visit to Novasolum allies the Principality of Paulovia, today announced the formation of three Royal Navy Squadrons which are tasked with exploratory expedition duties throughout Geiss. From the Officer's Mess of the HRMS Emperor of Alexandria, the King provided an overview of the mission of the three squadrons and their duties.

With the awareness of the two unexplored continents of Iotnargard and Sottica, the impetus to initiate a drive towards the exploration of these areas kicked into high gear at both the Palace and the War Office last week. "Gotzborg exemplifies the age of exploration and colonialism and it is just this kind of opportunity which fits so well into our overall national identity," a War Office official remarked prior to the King's announcement. "We see great potential to make a mark and open up a whole new area in the world, not just for Gotzborg, but for everyone."

The Palace posted a Press Release moments before the briefing which can be found HERE. Upon the completion of the briefing, the King was asked about the goals of the efforts.

"We must as a nation take all advantage of these opportunities. Once exhausted, there will not be another possibility of such large and unexplored areas again." When asked about Gotzborg motives the King was candid. "First and foremost its a golden opportunity to put our mark on any discoveries, secondly it will allow us to assess and evaluate opportunities for potential colonization in order to take advantage of resources and growing room for the nation. This is not to say there will be colonization, we will have to see what we find. The exciting priority is the discovery and exploration of these areas." So far, three Royal Navy squadrons have been formed Iotnargard Squadron, Sottica Squadron and the South Polar Seas Squadron.

Gotzborg is not the only nation looking into striking out for these mysterious places, New Brittania also announced an expedition to likewise explore Iotnargard. Lemuria has also expressed an interest in launching an expedition to Sottica, however nothing has been seen of this yet. So far Gotzborg is the only nation which has announced an expedition to the southern polar regions. This area is admittedly the most challenging and in the words of a War Office official in planning "a strategic and tactical wall. We don't know what we could be faced with and have no real indication of the realities. We can only make assumptions and prepare as best as possible to deal with those."

It is expected that as the awareness of the exploration grows, many other nations will jump on board with the efforts, something which may lead to potential conflicts between nations. When asked about this possibility, the King was blunt. "There exists strong possibilities with potential conflict. While our ships are ahead of the pack so to speak, the routes and schedule which we choose may be slower or faster than other nations. Should these situations arise however, I have the highest confidence in our Foreign Office to deal with them in a manner appropriate and should that fail, I have inestimable faith in our Royal Armed Forces to carry through our objectives to a successful completion."

It is expected that the expeditions of the the three Squadrons will occupy the next couple months, with information being returned home as it becomes available.

King's Birthday Honours Citizens & Foreigners Alike

JUIN, MARKHAM (GP) - The King today from the Royal Summerhouse approved and issued the Birthday Honours List, which in Gotzborg was nailed to the post outside of Lonenberg Palace as it has every year since the inception of the Royal Kingdom. This was followed by a formal issuance of the decree from the King's Public Attache, which was distributed to papers throughout the Kingdom.

The Birthday Honours List is usually the one time a year when both King and Kingdon recognize foreign heads-of-state and statesmen who have contributed in some way to Gotzborg, through either military, diplomatic, economic matters or simply as a token of goodwill. The Birthday Honours as well recognize citizens of Gotzborg who have likewise made contributions to the nation, the majority of new Knights and Dames occurring around this time yearly.

LONENBERG (GP) - With the recent withdrawl of Lemuria from the Grand Commonwealth, there has been a surge in activity from what has become the Confederate Rianates of Lemuria, coinciding somewhat to the return of the famous/infamous Kuralyov, who has taken up as the head Lemurian diplomat. The new Lemuria also marks Sander Dieleman's return to more active micronationalism and so far, things look good! The withdrawl of Lemuria did cause some concern, although in the end, the move was not blocked by others in the GC.

Arising somewhat out of this however has been a proposal in the Grand Commonwealth by Mr. Basil to form an Expansion Party which will espouse bringing the world under the control of the GC. So far it looks like response to the idea has been lukewarm at best. In other GC news, the Majlis is currently working on ratification of the Treaty with the rising star nation of Paulovia and the dread Shah of Babkha the Osman Shahanshah has stood for and been elected as Taoiseach. The other candidates mysteriously dropped out of the race, ensuring the Shah's success.

In Shireroth, Erik Mortis has recently succeeded Kaiseress Semisa as Head of State, to be known for his tenure as Kaiser Letifer II. Reaction to his ascencion, while initially mixed and with some threats of resignation, the emotions were quickly calmed and Shireroth as usual, continues to bubble in its own way, now off of ezboard and on their own new forum. I am sure ezboard will miss Shireroth.

Talamthom is working on an Economic Bill presented by Prime Minister Edgard Portela, which is currently the only activity occuring within the quaint Irish green Republic at the moment.

In the financial world, Sander Dieleman, the bank programming guru has been holding an open forum/focus group/fact-finding in regards to the potential profitability of micronational banks. Sand is currently working on the outline to potentially work into the creation of a new banking system.

Micronational conflicts around the world seem to be somewhat limited, however with the influx of new nations over the last couple months, the desire to 'mix it up' has been great but has not yet resulted in any managed conflicts. WIth the MRWS bogged down and non-functional, it doesn't seem likely that any conflicts will be occurring soon.

The Eagle wonders if it must be exam time as throughout the sector there seems to be an overall slowdown of activity, sickness and general apathy which occurs so frequently. Hopefully things swing back into motion soon, otherwise the news page may be a little less....meaty.

Royal Navy Settling In to Jutien

Eesdehaven, Jutien (GP) - Since the aquisition of the Duchy of Jutien from the Royal Crandish Republic, the state has been in transition mode. Although the Royal Crandish Republic maintained a military force, the War Office was quick to assemble both Army and Naval forces within the week of the announcement with the intention of establishing the authority of the Royal Kingdom in Jutien.

The War Office announced the formation of the Royal Northern Squadron from units of the Reserve Flotilla and Minorca Squadron and tasked them to carry the newly formed Jutien Brigade, commanded by Brigadier His Lordship Christopher the Count of Montrose, to the most far flung of Gotzborg's possessions. The Squadron and its Army cargo were already a week out of port before the Grand Commonwealth called into question the legality of the Crandish Kings' disposal of the states. Instead of being called back, the Squadron continued on its journey, being joined enroute by naval forces of the Viking Empire of Stormark, who provided escort the remainder of the way to Jutien.

Soon after the arrival of the Northern Squadron to Eesdehaven, the Jutien Brigade was disembarked and began to make their way throughout the Duchy, relieving the sparse groups of militias and units. There had been reports of some difficulty with the Sheriff of Northaven, although he was quickly relieved of his position and the City Constables told to remain at home while a unit of the Jutien Light Infantry (King Johanns' Own) maintained order in the city. The City Constabulary has since been called back to work and the Light Infantry has taken up barracks in the city.

As the Crandish Diet gathered, the Northern Squadron struggled to find enough coal to properlly resupply the ships. Although the issue was rectified with the dispatch of a couple colliers from Altamore, these were not due to arrive for a couple weeks. In order to get ships out and patrolling territorial waters, the Squadron was forced to completely uncoal some ships to top up others. HRMS Anthelia and HRMS Solhausen were soon dispatched to sea with the three Gunboats, Sandpiper, Ladybird and Gannet to customs, fisheries and coast guard patrols. Meanwhile, the remainder of the Squadron remained in port without the fuel to conduct operations if need be.

"It was a difficult situation, which the Naval Planning Office has been reprimanded for," a War Office Spokesman reported. "Never should any Naval asset be without ability to operate as may be required or needed. It goes against the standard of the Royal Navy."

The Anthelia and Solhausen did see action in regards to their patrol, putting an end to the smuggling of expensive artifacts which were later found to have come out of some Royal Crandish government buildings. The items included, desks, tables, paintings, rugs, and other fixtures which had come out of buildings throughout the Principality. Although it could not be discovered where the items were destined to, one Squadron officer told the Eagle on condition of anonymity, "one of the scalliwags questioned after his boat was confiscated reported that the items were going to a rich Sheik or Khan in the Grand Commonwealth, however he was not able to provide more specific information to allow us to confirm this."

Whether or not the information was correct, the Eagle knows of no public investigation going on into the issue. The pilfered items have since been returned to their origins.

With the Crandish Diet winding down to its last, the Northwern Squadron has settled more into its duties, comandeering the defunct Eedehaven Shipworks as the Naval Base, and the Naval Jetty in Torshaven as Naval Station for continuing operations along the coast and through the islands. The Naval Construction Office has not yet announced the formalization or construction of proper facilities for the Squadron, but these are expected in the coming months.

Lonenberg (GP) - Happy New Year from the Gotzborg Eagle!

As we enter 2006, we are consistently suprised by the evolution of the sector. While the norm seems to be nations coming as fast as they are going, the pendulum has swung somewhat the other way over the last two months with the arrival in the sector of a host of new micronations which look like they have no intention of "going the way of the dodo" as many have in the past.

Among these newcomers is the Principality of Paulovia which impressed insiders from the moment of their first post in the MCS, declaring their intent to apply for land after their first 3 months online passes. This in itself was a suprise. Many of those who have been about the sector for any length have come to gauge a new nation's possible longevity by their first impression on the MCS. Normally this entails a nation applying for land without first consulting the clearly posted rules and guidelines and then arguing to no end with the MCS management. Then it usually ends wih name calling on the part of the applicant and followed by a quick disappearance. Paulovia clearly impressed MCS Guru Ryan Caruso who replied to the Paulovian claim by stating "Paulovia seems to be an exception to the more recent micronations to be developed, in that it has shown exceptional quality in etiquette and diplomacy. I look forward to the time when Paulovia fully qualifies to join our organisation." Clearly if Paulovia continues on its course, it will in time become a strong and valuable part of the community.

The Foreign Office recently completed the Treaty of Recognition and Friendship with the Principality of Paulovia, prior to the Royal Kingdom's usual 3 month waiting period, in itself signifying unspoken approval for the Principality's maturity. Foreign Office insiders report that Gotzborg may be asking Paulovia to claim land on the Novasolum continent when they eventually qualify with the MCS.

In other news, the Royal Bank of Gotzborg opened two-way trading with the Central Bank of Anthelia after months of wrangling in regards to exchange rates. Anthelia's listed exchange rate was not inline with guidelines established by the Home Office and initial economic relations were halted. With the establishment of this link, Gotzborg businesses are looking forward to the opportunity to work more closely and within Anthelia.

The Royal Kingdom welcomes two newest citizens who have so far been making a name for themselves, Mr Thomas Maher and Mr John Cervantes. Mr Maher has already been appointed to the Royal Security Police Service in the Protective Services branch and is working on protection guidelines and protocols for the Kingdom's Royal and Government personages. Mr. Cervantes, who has recently been away on holiday, has been working on flag etiquette for the Kingdom.

And finally, the Chamber of Deputies hasnever been more active, mainly because of the enthusiastic activity and interest of Mr George Guelph. The Gotzborg Eagle wants to express its joy that the democrocratic institution of the Chamber is finally being utilized as it was intended! Good work George!

Home Office, Lonenberg, Gotzborg (GP) - The Royal Kingdom continues to forge ahead with its work in the economic side of the nation. Although progress in this important aspect of the nation took a while to gain some semblance of movement, the inertia seems to be noticeably picking up.

Late 2004 and early 2005 the King formed three major companies under the purview of the Royal Family, dealing specifically with shipbuilding, heavy industry and armaments respectively. Each of these companies produce a wide range of products specifically targetted at the simulationist aspect of the economy. With Courland Breweries joining the picture in the last month, the economic side could still be considered at a standstill.

With Mr Carson Smith's application and formation of a consulting service in late November and under the revised rules for companies, it marked the first new movement in this area. This was quickly followed by information gathering and questions regarding privately owned banking institutions seperate from the Royal Bank, and then a BIll int he Chamber of Deputies to guide banking regulation, which in turn resultedin Sir David Roest applying to open Royal Bison Savings & Loan

This movement and the wide and varied marketing which is being carried out by KRS Shipbuilding in Gotzborg, Babkha, Natopia, Stormark, Alexandria and Talamthom has so far resulted in a total combined 247 ships having been ordered to-date. The most recent new customer to KRS has been the County of Gong Li, a component of Shireroth, who has been the first to place an order from that nation.

Although KRS has been by far the most successful in sales and products so far, KSag Heavy Industry has launched a whole new line and effort in the area of railway locomotives and equipment targetted at those nations working on the Convention of Micras Standards and Values in the Grand Commonwealth and with the Novasolum Treaty nations of Gotzborg, Anthelia and Alexandria.

Time and committment in micronational projects ebbs and flows with the reality of life however it is hoped by many that the amount of nations who see the value and benefit to the micronational economy will grow and in turn allow a self-supported system to function.

Any nations interested in launching their own participation in the micronational economy can rest easy that at this point, a starting point for sure, all that is required is a MX2 account with a suitable starting capital which will not put inter-micronational exchanges to extremes. It is recommended that the starting money be between 4 to 6 million of the national currency.

There shall be an economy, but lets make it an economy of nations and not merely a national economy!

Government Conducts Life Safety Drill

Chancellery Building, Lonenberg (GP) - On November 14th, the Chancellery Building in Lonenberg, home and office of the Royal Chancellor as well as meeting place of the Royal Cabinet, was involved in the first life safety drill of government buildings in the capital.

At 4:00pm on the 14th, as most of the government was wrapping up the day, the fire alarm sounded throughout the building. Response was initially slow with the Minister of State, Foreign Office, Her Royal Highness Princess Julia being the first to evacuate from the building, followed shortly by the Royal Chancellor, Lord Montrose and then General of Police Lord Montin, who took control of the scene and re-entered the building to ensure personnel continued to evacuate.

All personnell were successfully evacuated with exception of the Minister of State Home Office, Prince Steven, and Deputy Minister of State Carson Smith, who it was later found was on business outside of the Chancellery.

Although not currently a micronational standard, Dr. Lynn Prentice of the Gotzborg Life Safety Institute recommends the practise being adopted. "The need to conduct ongoing training of all employees in any business, whether it be government or private institution, it paramount to minimizing potential liability from the loss of life or login," says Dr. Prentice. "Forum emergencies, while not prevalent, should not preclude anyone from making the efforts to protect life within the scope of their business. Forum fires in themselves can be immensely destructive." While unable to comment on whether or not life safety drills would have helped avoid the catastrophic losses of May 31st of this year, Dr. Prentice did say "life is the most important component of protection here, and while it would have been nice to have kept the information, thankfully no one lost their logins."

The Royal Security Police Service were reported to have handled themselves with the calm and coolness expected of our law enforcement officials. The RSPS filed an official report the next day to the Office of His Royal Majesty on the incident. It is rumored that recommendations within the report that two members of the government are to be fined for slow response. "It's merely a notice to ensure everyone, no matter who, is required to respond and react appropriately.

Altogether, sources within the government indicate that there will be legislation forthcoming which will enshrine the legal obligation of all businesses and enterprises with facilities in Gotzborg to conduct life safety drills once a year.

Discussion between the Ofice of the Minister of State in the Home Office (headed by HG Liam, Duke of Montin) and Royal Bank Chief Officer Steven DeBlood have resulted in this breakthrough for Gotzborg. Gotzborg will join a list of growing micronations to adopt some sort of economic system.

Finally, government employees can look forward to spending their hard earned money [which is basically everyone in the Kingdom, as the government is essentially the only employer at the moment].

Xtreme's in an Extreme EMSL Match

‘What’s a defence?’ was the cry on the lips of spectators in a trilling match in which the Trishuli Xtremes won away against Wizards SC Westmore 7-5. In a match which saw goals, it is perhaps not surprising that both defences looked very shaky. Both teams played breathtaking end to end football, and no team will be in the purists books for that performance.

It was a match of many similarities. Both teams lined up with weak defences, sprouting midfield players covering in already numerically thin lines. Both teams found ample time to run it and had many chances to test both keepers. In the end, it was the team which had the most shots that won. The fans go home happy, the sponsors go home happy, but both managers have little to work with for the next match.

In the only other full match played, the two most defensively solid teams battled it out. The Vayelon Firewolves used the home ground advantage to score a tough 1-0 over the Gotzborg Eagles. The goal came from a build-up of play that originated with the full back at the other end. Both teams played smart, cleaver football that will serve them well in matches ahead. In the end though, one passage of play decided the match. For full scores, see here.

The EMSL table is finding a jam up the top, with the Vayelon Firewolves two matches clear on top with 17 points out of seven matches. Places two to four are separated only on goal difference, with the fifth placed Arzan three points behind. For full details, see here.

Welcome to review. Every so often, the Gotzborg Eagle will post a review/s about different things. To kick this Review off, we have a book and a website.

Book

Be prepared to step inside the world of the newspaper if you decide to read ‘A good life : newspapering and other adventures’, an autobiography by Ben Bradlee. Arguably the most noticeable achievement of Bradlee’s life was to doggedly pursue and finally uncover one of the greatest political scandals of all time, Watergate.

Bradlee’s life is told in this book, which chronicles his life from early on, right up to after his retirement from helm of the Washington Post. Reading this book you get a sense of the man behind the headlines, of a time where newspapers balanced between being a mirror on society and being an investigator in it.

Having been published in 1995 does not diminish this book’s capacity to be a strong read. Of particular value of it being published a decade ago is that we are able to see history’s judgement on the events that Bradlee was involved in; Watergate, the changing face and nature of the media, the evolution of relationships between the media and famous figures, the identity of Deep Throat.

Was it a good read? Yes. Was it a captivating read? Only once you got settled in. It is not the kind of book that demands your time like a Harry Potter or Dan Brown; it will not grab you and force you to read it. What it will do is offer an insight into the newspaper publishing world, as told by one of the men who lived, breathed and ultimately shaped it.

Wizards' magic overcomes Arzan in EMSL

Arzan and Wizards SC Westmore played out the only match in week 5 of the EMSL, a match in which both teams thought that da-fence was part of da-house [say it out loud and you'll see what a bad joke it is].

Playing in bright sunshine, both teams had plenty of attacking options as the respective defences seemed indecisive and unsure of their place. The only thing stopping more goals scored was the ordinary finishing from both teams. What shots that were on target proved difficult for both goalkeepers, and with the number of shots on target due to the number of shots launched, a scoreline of 4-3 in favour of Wizards SC Westmore was not surprising.

With a halftime lead of 2-1, the Wizards launched long ball after long ball in the second half, not bothering with the midfield. Some nice passing saw two goals result for Arzan, but the result was never really in question.

With five matches gone, the Vayelon Firewolves lead with 11 points, followed by three teams on 10 points separated on goal difference; Trishuli Xtremes (+11), Gotzborg Eagles (+7) and Wizards SC Westmore (+5). Old-York United are struggling with only 1 point.

EMSL begins with high scoring draw

A high scoring draw greeted the new EMSL season, with Wizards SC Westmore and Vayelon Firewolves entertaining the crowd with a 6-6 draw. Disappointingly, this was the only match played as the three other matches were won on default; see full result here

The Wizards opened the scoring with a slick move that originated in the corner. A quickly taken free kick saw players rush to the front post, only to realise too late that this was a decoy that left the back post open for an easy header by the captain. A passage of sustained pressure then ensured, and it was only a matter of time before the Wizards scored again. They duly did this twice, and only a rare counterattack from the Firewolves that ended in the striker beating the ‘keeper one-on-one ensured that the Firewolves stayed in touch.

Whatever the Firewolves’ manager said to them during the break worked, for they came out a more determined team. A shot that rattled the crossbar was the first indication that things were going to be different, and such was their play that the Wizard’s left defender was the first recipient of a yellow card for the season; an ugly hack at the striker’s legs when he was past gave the referee no option.

Two free kicks later, the game was all squared up at three all. For both, the Wizards’ ‘keeper rightly blamed his defence. Both times the ball had found its way to an unmarked man, who duly converted. With the chant of the crowd ringing in their ears, the Wizards’ fell behind to a sweet move originating from the back, a passage of play in which no Wizards’ players managed to touch.

The Wizards’ then seemed to switch to a long ball game, playing a version of total football; in attack, all were up, in defence, all were back. They were stung again and again in the counter attack and it was more good luck then skill that they only conceded two more goals. But weight of numbers finally paid off and a shot took a deflection to leave them only one goal down. The Wizards peppered the goals, and the ‘keeper was unsighted as the last goal was scored with 3 minuted remaining.

EMSL to Kick-Off this Weekend

With the micronational world recovering from the Ezboard attack, the Gotzborg Eagle is proud to announce that the next season of the English Micronational Soccer League (EMSL) gets underway this weekend. Only eight teams will contest this season’s competition, well down from the number last season. On the positive side, defending champions the Trishuli Xtremes will be attempting to win back-to-back titles, and stamp themselves into EMSL history. Only time will tell if this will be possible.

With only eight teams, a good start will be vital for all teams. The first round of matches will be an early indication of how prepared the teams are for this season, and the coaches’ tactics and ideas will be in full view of the public. Of the notable fixtures, the Trishuli Xtremes start their defence of the title away against Gloriae FC, and a tough match is expected when Wizards SC Westmore hosts the Vayelon Firewolves. New Mnisterial Appointment

Gotzborg has a new Deputy Vice-Minister of State for Justice, Mr Niall De Huntly. Mr. De Huntly became a prospective citizen of Gotzborg on the 19th of May, and was appointed Vice-Minister on the 20th of May.

The Gotzborg Eagle wishes Vice-Minister De Huntly all the best in his role, and looks forward to seeing what he contributes to Gotzborg. His proposed report will be watched with great interest.

Editorial: Musings on Mothers

I don’t know about you, but I celebrated Mothers Day yesterday (on Sunday; I don’t know how the whole world times thing fully works). To be honest, to call it celebrating is a bit rich; my mum suffered the indignity of having her son have an assignment due the next day-guess which one won. But she knows I still love her, and she gets to choose her own present, and she understands, and I love my mum for that.

It got me thinking about mothers in general. We all physically have or had one (unless you happen to be Adam created by God-but that is another editorial for another time); most, fortunately, had a mother in spirit too. To think that she lay on her back and endured such pain to bring us into the world, only for us to turn around a few short years later and sulk when we didn’t get our favourite toy, graduating to sulking in our room or other hiding place when we didn’t get our way (and then just did it anyway). For all the pain that mothers go through, we treat them really badly sometimes.

Think of all the things that mothers do; she is one half of the parental unit, and until recently, was the one who did much of the raising. She attends our needs, sets boundaries, laughs with us, scolds us, berates us for not finishing a group assignment earlier and then celebrates with us when it finally gets finished at 7 in the morning after working the whole night through. And to think that they do all this without having formal training.

Think about it; one of the most important tasks in society, the raising of a human being, and there is no formal qualification possible. No test to pass, no exam to cram study for, no practical component to master. More and more parenting classes are being run, but for the most part mothers are thrust into the role anew. Some say it gets easier with each child, but that is balanced by trying to deal with a new life to give attention to. There is no formal qualification possible. And yet we can look to our mothers and be thankful of what they have done.

They give their time for us; nurture us, put their life on hold as they decide that our life is more important than theirs right now. We go along our merry way, and we hit a certain age and look back on how much we’ve grown and done. And then we realise that our mothers have placed a lot of their life on hold for us during that time. It is one of the ultimate self sacrifices-putting another’s life before your own. And mothers do that, all over the world, everyday.

There are some for whom Mother’s Day doesn’t hold happy memories. There are some for whom their mother was only a mother in name and blood and not in spirit. For those, I cannot begin to understand how or what you feel. It is never too late to extend the hand of friendship again. For others, Mother’s Day only holds memories of the past, memories never to be repeated again. For you, I urge you to cherish the memories; let your mother always live in your heart. Remember that for every family with a missing mother is a family with a missing child; a mother need not exist only in blood, but can be a mother in deed and spirit.

So as the role and contribution of mothers get recognised on Mothers Day, take a moment out of your busy lives to remember your mother. A phone call, visit or hug will do; just something to let her know that you appreciate what she did and still does for you. And to me mother, who has kept me and my sister safe for my 20 years, Happy Mother’s Day (even if you don’t and won’t read this).

Law School Re-open

EMSL: Registration Open and a New Media Partner

The English Micronational Soccer League is open for registration. As of 1 May, only four teams had registered. This is not only disappointing news for the EMSL director, but also for the managers involved. Without more teams, the league will not achieve the same interest that last season's competition did, when the Trishuli Xtremes defeated 11 other teams with a five point margin.

Registration has been open since the 10th of April, and is still open; see here. There is no word on the closing date, but all who are interested are recommended to apply soon.

In other EMSL news, this publication is now the Official Media Partner of the EMSL. The Gotzborg Eagle will be providing media coverage of the EMSL through the season. This is the first media deal that the Gotzborg Eagle has concluded, and we hope for success in this venture.

What is Gotzborg's favourite book? We may interact with each other, share views and ideas, argue and in general live in or visit the micronational nation of Gotzborg. But what do we read, and what books do we treasure?

Today, the Gotzborg Eagle is launching Gotzborg's Favourite Book, a search to look for what books we Gotzers and Gotzborg visitors love. Voting is already open, and is open to all, Gotzborg residents in particular. To vote, simply go here, read the guidelines, and vote!

In comparison, a recent Australian surveyof Australia's favourite book had The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein as the number one book, followed by Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and The Bible (Various Contributors). If sales are a measure of a book's favour, the current best selling books on amazon.com are Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J. K. Rowling, followed by The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century by Thomas L. Friedman and Freakonomics : A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner.

It will certainly be interesting to see which books get voted, and which book receives the award of Gotzborg's Favourite Book. But none of this will happen if you don't vote, so start thinking and start voting here!

Gotzborg Lodges Claim with MCS!!

In a bold move, His Royal Majesty has decided to leap onto the Micronational Cartography Society (MCS) map of Mircas; grabbing up a little more than a small Colony this time. The land claim can be seen HERE, and is obviously a fair shake larger than previous claims by Gotzborg.

The idea to make a larger claim was originally presented by the Duke Altamore, and supported by both Prince Steven and Duke Stathearn. His Royal Majesty then joined the fray, with the end result being somewhat of a compromise; the land proposed by Duke Altamore was much larger than the eventual caim.

The Archduchy of Pendronia will now be represented on Mircas, along with the Duchies of Altamore and Montefeltro, as well as the County of Avondale. It's possible that Gotzborg will continue to claim land in the future, ever-expanding her borders and making her impact on Mircas, and the Micronational World.

In Konigplatz, His Royal Majesty shared the updated map of Gotzborg, reflecting the changes and presenting a much cleaner graphic. The new map can be seen HERE.

Royal Prank!

Gotzborg was the victim of an April Fool’s prank when HRM August Charles II announced that a proposal that the monarchs of Gotzborg, Hanover and Varennes would trade thrones and constitutions for some time. Citizens of Gotzborg were outraged at this proposal, and much feeling was vented. Citizens expressing their feelings included the Duke of Stathearn HG Nicholas, Duke of Altamore Robert Davis and Mr Benjamin Gray. It seemed like a split in Gotzborg was imminent if this plan was adopted.

When April 1st rolled around, HRM August Charles II officially declared that the proposal was an April Fools prank. Apologising 'for any heart attacks or near emigrations', he reassured all citizens that he had no plans of switching thrones or constitutions. HM Alexander of All Hanover also apologised for his part in the prank. While some citizens had clued in to this before April 1, some hadn't (including this writer) and after getting over the shock, life has moved towards normality again.

In related news:

-The spirit of April 1 was alive when the Prince of Gotzborg sovereignvikingemperor launched a Coup d'État on Gotzborg. Decrees included exiling former royalty to the North Pole, ordering pink bunny suits be worn, and appointing Lady Chloe Davis Bouncer of the National Discotheque.

-A bill in the chamber of deputies to prevent 'throne swapping' is in limbo since the reason behind the move was a prank (and a very good one!).

-April 1 sentiment was also present here.

Gotzborg: Open for Business

The economy in Gotzborg was recently boosted when the King of Gotzborg, HRM August Charles II, set out guidelines for starting a company. These guidelines are under the domain of Deputy Vice Minister of State, Commerce & Industry, Mr David Roest, and will operate until corporations legislation is enacted.

Currently, there are three businesses that have been set up under the guidelines; Davidson Imports, Königlich Schwerindustrie AG (KSag) and the Royal Armaments Company. These three companies, as well as the Gotzborg Eagle, will be places for people and organisations to spend their hard earned Thalers. New Minister and Vice-Minister Appointed

Duke Nicholas of Stathearn has been appointed the new Minister of State of State for the Foreign Office. He moved quickly to appoint a vice minister, Mr Christopher Harris-Till. With large shoes to fill following the resignation of the Duke of Altamore Robert Davis, the nation will be looking towards the two ministers to actively look after Gotzborg's foreign affairs. The Gotzborg Eagle wishes both men well in their new positions.

Staff Appointments

The Gotzborg Eagle is pleased to announce that Angel Davis, the Duchess of Altamore, and Sir Hamlin H Harte are now staff on the Gotzborg Eagle.

Angel Davis, the Duchess of Altamore, is the new deputy editor of the Gotzborg Eagle. She was previously the (almost) sole contributor of the Eagle, and has proven her journalistic skills in the past. She brings to the Eagle experience, knowledge and a great personality. The Gotzborg Eagle is very pleased to have secured her services.

Sir Hamlin H Harte is now a reporter of the Gotzborg Eagle. The sole proprietor of the Gotzborg Grenadier, Sir Hamlin is also the curator of the Royal Library of Gotzborg. The Gotzborg Eagle looks forward to continued high standards from Sir Hamlin, in line with his other achievements in Gotzborg.

Editorial: Supporting University Plans

There are current talks under way in Gotzborg to run a micronational university. An idea proposed by then prospective citizen Christopher Harris-Till (now Deputy Vice-Minister of State, Health and Education) have resulted in serious talks about Gotzborg running or even setting up a micronational educational institution, most likely a university.

What is being proposed is not easy. Other micronational ideas regarding education (The Imperial Republic of Shireroth has a Ministry of Research and Education, with a University Office within (http://p211.ezboard.com/fshirerothfrm13); The Atteran Empire has the University of Munich (http://p081.ezboard.com/ftheforumoftherasinatefrm93); and a discussion on micronations.net (http://p074.ezboard.com/fmicronationalnewsnetwork48264frm3.showMessage?topicID=337.topic)) illustrate an interest that has not been matched by continuing sustained success. The effort needed to establish education, the need to get suitable and willing instructors and the requirement of attracting and retaining students are all difficult tasks. Yet in spite of those difficulties, this editorial fully supports the Royal Kingdom of Gotzborg’s plans to establish a university.

The discussion started by Mr Harris-Till generated serious discussion from several people indicates willingness from several people to help in this process. People who contributed included then Deputy Vice-Minister of State, Health and Education David Roest, Atteran Ambassador Ras Noseworthy and the Duke of Stathearn HG Nicholas, Vice Minister of State Foreign Office, respected members of the Gotzborg (if not the micronational) community. This will not be a one-person project, dying when interest or time fades; it is a collective effort and thus more likely to succeed.

Another encouraging factor is the willingness for those involved to educate themselves; to learn from the mistakes of the past and to consider past and present structures. This is not a naive project, blindly forging ahead; it has been a carefully considered plan, with serious input from those in Attera who have done what Gotzborg tries to do. This simple step indicates a degree of sense and maturity that is sometimes lacking in the micronational world. [Yes, I am fully aware that I basically rushed in blindly to reform the Gotzborg Eagle; I claim insanity ;)]

Education has always been an important part of the learning process. Whether by simple teaching by watching and copying in the field, or more formalised teaching involving notes, assignments and exams, education has been a way of passing on knowledge and experience from one generation to the next. In this way, the mistakes of the past are not repeated and successful methods replicated. That Gotzborg seeks to improve itself with an educational institution is commendable. That it is being done in a way which optimises success must be supported.

Gotzborg Wins Big at The FNORDs

Lonenberg (GP) - On 29 January 2005 in the Norton Convention Centre, the FNORDs were awarded. Gotzborg is home to two awards this year; a Community Award for Best Website, and a Personal Award to Duke Altamore for Most Committed Micronationalist.

His Royal Majesty King August Charles II is quite happy with the receipt of the Community Award. It is through his many hours of hard work, and the labour of love for his nation that Gotzborg was so seen as having the Best Website. We are all proud to be Gotzers, and the Staff of the Eagle are pleased to offer His Majesty our most sincere congratulations.

The award presented to Duke Altamore can indeed be seen as one of (if not THE) most prestigious FNORD for a private citizen. The Most Committed Micronationalist award is an affirmation of the dedication, service, and unwavering loyalty that His Grace has exhibited since his arrival in Gotzborg five months ago. This is what Duke Altamore said about his award:

"I quite honestly didn't expect to win this award. It's quite an honour, and I am still in a state of shock. What amazed me almost as much as winning the award, was that my Nomination came from a Communist Leader, and was seconded by the Leader of a Republic. It really made me feel good to know that I have somehow reached across those invisible barriers, and touched lives on both sides of that fence. I share this FNORD with my wife, Angel; without her, I would be completely unable to be as active and dedicated as I am. I love her very much, and am very fortunate to have such a wonderful wife. My personal thanks also to everyone in Gotzborg and in Novaya Zemlya who have worked with me and helped make me look good. Without you all, I wouldn't have been recognised like this. Thank you, Comrades and Friends."

The New Pendronia-Gotzborg Family

Lopendo Palace, Pendronia (GP) - In a joint signing ceremony held at Lopendo Palace in Pendronia, King August Charles II of Gotzborg and Pendronia's own King Steven I DeBlood issued a Joint Royal Decree effectively creating Pendronia as an Archduchy within the Royal Kingdom of Gotzborg.

"This is a historic day for both nations," the King commented. "Today, both Gotzborg and Pendronia are combining their talents, histories and directions in order to better pursue a continued existence in a world where all too often nations fall into inactivity and die."

"Pendronia's history is too rich and too valuable to simply lose to time, its important to maintain that pride and tradition within Gotzborg," said Professor H. Cullen of the King's College in Pendronia.

The unification will see all active Pendronian citizens granted immediate citizenship in Gotzborg with all inactive Pendronian citizens able to gain their citizenships if so desired. Also merging into Gotzborg society will be His Grace Nicholas, Duke of Westhin who by decree will be made Duke of Stathearn in Gotzborg to recognize past contributions to Pendronia.

"Both Steven and myself felt that it was important that Nicholas be recognized for his great contributions to Pendronia over the last two years, of which he has been Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs," said August Charles of Nicholas. "It simply wouldn't have been fair or encouraging to any Pendronian coming to Gotzborg to have to start all over again after investing so much time and effort into Pendronia. Those who have contributed shall be recognized."

Also in the Decree the Pendronian Order of the Bison and Order of the Green Chalice will be joining the existing Gotzborg orders. All Pendronian peerages, while still being recognized will no longer be considered 'landed' peerages and will be title only. All Pendronian peerages not currently used will be held in abeyance.

Pendronian forum will be retained however will be put into archive and while it will remain accessible, persons will be unable to post. The Pendronian website will as well be retained as an archival unit of the Archduchy of Pendronia.

Whilst changes will begin to happen over the next two weeks, the official impact date of this major event is officially January 1st, 2005.

EXTRA! EXTRA! Duke Altamore in Hospital

Lonenberg (GP) - The Royal Chancellor of Gotzborg, His Grace Robert, Duke of Altamore, was admitted to hospital last week with a case of pneumonia.

Angel, Duchess of Altamore was finally able to take some time to return home at which point she informed the Royal Family, requesting that all persons who would have reason to know about this are informed.

Being that Duke Altamore has encompassed the depth and breadth of micronationalism in many ways, be it through work on the Aremberg-Velsen Pact, through his outstanding Judicial and Legal work, his aggressive and effective diplomatic work, his role as Royal Cancellor or his unceasing desire to continue to draw everyone together into the larger micronational community we are, Duke Robert has created much respect for himself and his home in Gotzborg.

The Gotzborg Eagle would take a step outside of the usual journalism to ask all persons to please put your prayers or thoughts with Robert as he recovers. Those interested may come by the Royal Kingdom of Gotzborg and post their thoughts, comments and wishes which we will see get delivered to the Duke.

Götzborg and Stormark Announce Honours

On 26 October 2004, His Imperial Majesty, Harald Thorstein I the Generous Giver, of Stormark, inducted His Royal Majesty of Götzborg into his nation's Peerage. The Imperial Proclamation states that HRM August Charles II is now also Prince of Nordhurland Vestra in Stormark. The Proclamation came very soon after Götzborg and Stormark had concluded a Treaty of Recognition and Friendship.

In addition to His Majesty's Peerage, His Grace, the Duke of Altamore, was Knighted into the Most Illustrious Imperial Order of Sleipnir, at the rank of Knight Commander. Both honours were humbly accepted by the recipients.

"I do not know what I have done to deserve such honour from yourself or Stormark, however I am deeply thankful and appreciative of the peerage and the title." - HRM King August Charles II upon hearing of his Peerage in Stormark.

"I am truly and deeply honoured... I cannot express into words how appreciative I am." - HG Robert, Duke of Altamore after learning of his Knighthood in Stormark.

At around the same time as these various honours were being bestowed upon Götzborgers, HRM King August Charles II was working on a Royal Decree of his own. On 29 October, HIM Haral Thorstein I was made Knight Commander of Most Noble and Ancient Order of the Crown in Götzborg. This Order of Knighthood is the highest in Götzborg, and is truly an honour. HIM had this to say about the induction:

"Thank you for your most cordial gesture. I'm still speechless...."

The Emperor of Stormark is indeed a humble and honourable man - most worthy of the award granted him by HRM of Götzborg.

Recent Boom in Foreign Affairs

Lonenberg (GP) - The month of October saw a flurry of activity in the Foreign Office. During that time, Götzborg concluded Treaties with six nations, has one pending, and has ratified both the Raspur Charter and the Aremberg-Velsen Pact. The recent interest in relations with Götzborg has been very encouraging. The Minister of State for the Foreign Office is His Grace, the Duke of Altamore:

"We have been very pleased with the latest developments in the Foreign Office. I feel that the interests of other nations in forming official relationships with Götzborg means that we are not only visible to the Micronational world, but that we are somewhat admired. Signing the Raspur Charter brings us into a great Community of nations, and will no doubt serve to enhance our relations with the rest of the world. I am also happy to see that the Aremberg-Velsen Conference has met with mostly positive criticism as well; I am hoping that with Götzborg heavily involved in both of these Organisations, that our nation will continue to rise in the estimations and opinions of others. I also hope and pray that our current visibility brings with it some more citizens!!!"

Of the nations that Götzborg has signed Treaties with recently, one has been a communist nation; The Commune of Velsen and the Royal Kingdom of Götzborg signed a Treaty of Recognition and Friendship which went into effect on 19 October. This marks the first Treaty Götzborg has agreed to with a communist nation.

Lonenberg (GP) - HG Robert, Duke of Altamore, has spearheaded the formation and implementation of a new cooperative effort between communist and non-communist Micronations. Along with Comrade Wheelchairman from the Commune of Velsen, His Grace has founded the Aremberg-Velsen Conference. So far, the Conference has four Member-Nations: Gotzborg, Commune of Velsen, Natopia, and the USSR. Delegates from each nation have already been meeting, and have agreed upon the Aremberg-Velsen Pact, an instrument that institutes non-aggression between members, and sets the rules for cooperation and if necessary, arbitration/mediation.

The Pact is currently being ratified by the Founding Members' Nations, since it is, in essence, a Treaty. Once the four Founding Member-Nations have ratified the Pact, the Conference will be opened to all who wish to participate. The Conference does not assume any powers, and has been created with the idea of promoting peace, tolerance, and understanding. This is truly a remarkable project, with potentially far-reaching ramifications; such as the prevention of a Micronational Cold War.

His Grace was kind enough to break from his already busy schedule to contribute the following statement about the Aremberg-Velsen Conference:

"The Aremberg-Velsen Conference (ArVe) was founded in order to bring together communist and non-communist micronations in a forum of dialogue and friendship. Our goal is for member nations to cooperate and understand one another, without sacrificing personal beliefs. This is indeed an important project; as the recent events in Coralia are testimony to. Upon joining, Member-Nations agree to end hostilities against one another, and to refrain from espionage, and other harmful activities. We want to show the Micronational world that it is possible for those of opposing ideologies to work together in harmony, with the best interests of the people in mind. I am honoured to have been a part of this Organisation's founding, and am pleased that nations such as Velsen, and the USSR, have shown such support. I have high hopes for the Conference, and hope to see many more Member-Nations join once we officially open our doors, in about a week."

Hamlin Hannibal Harte Knighted

Lonenberg (GP) - In a special ceremony held at Lonenberg Palace on 7 October 2004, His Royal Majesty, King August Charles II, inducted Minister Hamlin Hannibal Hart to the rank and title - Knight of The Most Exalted Order of the Star of Götzborg. This is one of Götzborg's highest awards of Knighthood, and was presented to Sir Hamlin in recognition of his hard work in establishing a National Library, accepting the position of Minister of State, Home Office, and creating the Holy Order of Sanctuary in Götzborg. Sir Hamlin had this to say about his Knighthood:

"I am surprised, to say the least, but honoured just the same. I want to thank His Majesty for granting me such an honourable title, as he is truly a very benevolent King. It seems we have another occasion to celebrate. I am very honoured. All I can say is thank you to all of you. Thank you."

We congratulate Sir Hamlin on this well deserved award. We look forward to many more great things from him in the future.

Sir Robert Davis Elevated to Ducal Rank

Lonenberg (GP) - On 5 October 2004, His Royal Majesty, King August Charles II, elevated Sir Robert Davis to the Title of Duke of Altamore. This honour was bestowed upon Sir Robert for his dedicated and lyal service to Götzborg, and in recognition of his high achievements. His Majesty makes mention in the Royal Decree making the announcement, that the award of a Landed Peerage in Götzborg is the greatest honour one can have bestowed upon them.

I have asked the Duke for his thoughts on his recent ennoblement, but he appears to still be in a state of shock. Since this appointment means that I am now a Duchess, I can speak for myself here and say that I am most honoured and thankful that His Majesty has seen fit to raise my husband to the nobility. It makes me proud, and I can assure everyone that His Grace the Duke is also proud; he's just not able to articulate that with his jaw on the floor.

New President for the Chamber of Deputies!

Lonenberg (GP) - On 2 October 2004, His Excellency the Royal Chancellor installed Mister Ernest Wilde as President of the Chamber of Deputies. Results of the vote held in Götzborg were 4-0-0. After the unanimous result, His Royal Majesty directed the Chancellor to make the announcement and allow Mister Wilde to start his new job. Mister Wilde has sent the following statement into this office for publication:

"I am honoured to hold the post of President of the Chamber of Deputies, even if it is only an interim position. I hole only an interim position because other duties might keep me away for longer that expected, and it is only fair that should s/he come along with better skills, I would gladly relinquish my position. My aim in this job is to keep the Chamber of Deputies running smoothly, and to ensure that the will of the people be acted on appropriately through the Chamber.

I do not promise that it will be easy, or that all will like me; had I wanted that I would have been a stand-up comedian. What I do promise is that the Chamber of Deputies will function to the best of my abilities. Legislation is but one way in which a legal system operates, and it is this way in which I have chosen, at this time, to serve."

Since there is no specific Law in place that deals with an Interim President for the Chamber of Deputies, Mister Wilde holds the position with full rights and responsibilities. His decision to step down should someone better suited come along, is his alone, and he is not bound to that. He has been duly elected, and may hold his position for the duration of time set forth in our Constitution: six months. Mister Wilde is congratulated on his appointment; we here at the Eagle wish him all the best.

Appointment of Royal Chancellor

Lonenberg (GP) - On 28 September 2004, His Royal Majesty, King August Charles II, appointed Sir Robert Davis to the Office of Royal Chancellor. This position is the highest in Götzborg's civilian Government. With the recent boost in Götzborg's citizenship and participation levels, His Majesty's timing seems to be perfect.

When asked about the appointment, His Excellency said:

"I was rather surprised when His Majesty asked me to become the Royal Chancellor. From the inception of my citizenship in Götzborg, my only goals were in relation to the Judiciary. Once I had been appointed Lord Justice of the Crown, I really felt like I'd accomplished all I set out to do. Götzborg now has a working Judicial System, a comprehensive Code of Law, and a wonderful institution for the training of Legal Officers. I know that things are bound to change, and that what I've helped to create will no doubt go through many incarnations; but that is the nature of Government, and it's one of the best signs of growth. I am looking forward to helping lead Götzborg as we embark on a new era of prosperity, as well as a strengthening of collaborations amongst the Ministers and citizens of our great nation."

In the interests of eliminating a potential biased, Sir Robert was commanded by His Majesty to step down as Lord Justice of the Crown before taking over as Royal Chancellor. His Excellency does, however, retain his position as the Foreign Minister.

Public Debates Chamber of Deuputy's Fate

Lonenberg (GP) - On 27 September, His Royal Majesty made a seemingly innocuous statement in an attempt to spark public interest in Götzborg's Legislative Division, the Chamber of Deputies. What followed was a heated, yet respectful debate on the Chamber, and it's potential fate. The debate took place in Konigplatz, Götzborg's Public Forum.

Some citizens were in favour of dissolving the Chamber's official duty as a legislative body, reverting Götzborg to a more pure, and Total Monarchy. Most citizens, however, favoured leaving the Chamber in place, and merely finding people to fill it's positions. Over the past few months, His Majesty has made allowances for the lack of interest by allowing all citizens a seat in the Chamber - including the ability to draft Bills, and vote on potential laws. This is obviously not in accord with what the Chamber was meant and designed to do.

His Majesty has said that he wishes to find a qualified, and interested person for the position as President of the Chamber. He feels that once this all-important position is filled, that the Chamber can be kick-started, and hopefully attract others to fill the remaining seats. With the recent boost in our citizenry, we're bound to find a few people who are willing to accept the challenge, and move Götzborg into a new era of legislative growth.

New Minister of State, Home Office

Lonenberg (GP) - On 21 September, His Royal Majesty, King August Charles II, appointed Mister Hamlin Hannibal Harte to the position of Minister of State for the Home Office. The appointment came after Mister Harte had begun work on Gotzborg's new Royal Library, which is expected to be a repository for the literary and artistic works of all Gotzborgers. When asked about his appointment, Mister Harte had to say:

"I am most pleased with my appointment to Minister of State, Home Office. And I have all the faith in the world that my services should prove to be fruitful for Gotzborg, His Majesty, and the great Citizens of our nation. As Minister of State (Home Office), I hope to reach a pinnacle point in social affairs, to set a standard for all deputies within the Home Office, and light a beacon for the great people of Gotzborg."

Mister Harte went on to say that he will focus mainly on social issues such as education, history, and tradition.

His Royal Majesty has said that he is looking forward to Mister Harte's input and contributions. We congratulate him on his appointment, and wish him many successes.

Royal Order of Merit Awards Ceremony

Lonenberg (GP) - On 20 September, in a ceremony held at Lonenberg Palace, His Royal Majesty, King August Charles II, inducted five new members into the Royal Order of Merit.

The Commanders Cross was awarded to Thomas Godalming, who served Gotzborg as the first Minister of State in the Foreign Office.

The Officers Cross with Swords & Crown was awarded to both Lady Angel Davis, and Sir Robert Davis, KOE. My award was presented for my work here on the Eagle, as well as loaning myself out to Attera for some minor graphic design work.

Sir Robert's award was presented in recognition of his hard work in getting the King Charles II School of Law completed and ready for it's first set of students.

The Cross 4th Class with Swords was awarded to George Santos for his service as first Minister of State in the Home Office, and for setting up Gotzborg within the soccer leagues of the EMSL and FMFA.

The Cross 4th Class was awarded to Captain Michael Smith for his initiative and enthusiasm in his first efforts while serving in the Royal Army.

All recipients are congratulated on their well-earned recognitions.

Lord Justice of the Crown Appointed

Lonenberg (GP) - On 15 September, His Royal Majesty, King August Charles II, made the announcement that he has appointed Sir Robert Davis, KOE as Lord Justice of the Crown for the Royal Kingdom of Gotzborg.

This appointment comes on the heels of the Judicial Establishment Act 2004 being approved and placed into law, the creation of the King Charles II School of Law, as well as the creation of a Criminal Code, three projects spearheaded and conducted by Sir Robert. His Royal Majesty has been most pleased with the work performed by Sir Robert over the past month, and has bestowed this honour upon him in recognition of his hard work, and unique abilities.

Here is what Sir Robert had to say in response to the appointment:

"I am most honoured and humbled at His Majesty's faith in my abilities, and in his kind words of support and appreciation over my recent work. I shall endeavour to make him, as well as all citizens of Gotzborg, proud of our Judicial System, and those who serve within it's ranks. We still have much work to do, and I am looking forward to tackling future projects. With the King Charles II School opening on Monday, this is a great time for Gotzborg. We will be instructing several Micronational Heads of State during this first class; I hope that the lessons learned and the atmosphere in which classes are conducted will give them cause to praise us to others, and create for Gotzborg a unique place amoung the Micronations of the world. Influx of New Citizens!!

Lonenberg (GP) - Over the past week, Gotzborg has been graced with four brand new citizens. Each of these individuals is new to Micronationalism, and bring with them a genesis of energy and fervor. It would certainly seem that the recruitment efforts of His Majesty the King of Gotzborg have been very successful.

Out of the four newcomers, we have a macronational law student, Mr. Ernest Wilde, who is hoping to be of use to Sir Robert Davis, KOE, with the King Charles II School of Law. Mr. Wilhelm von Mackensen has come to Gotzborg with the desire to join the Royal Navy and work within the government. Mr. Michael Smith wants to work within the Royal Army, and was recently awarded a Commission as Captain by His Royal Majesty; he is also working to create an Environmental Protection Group within Gotzborg for the preservation of our natural resources, and the edcuation of citizens. Our fourth, and newest citizen, Mr. Hamlin Hannibal Harte, has begun work on a new National Library! We are quite pleased with these latest additions to our beloved Gotzborg, and we extend a warm welcome to all who might have an interest in our unique, and proud Micronation.

Gotzborg Law School Countdown

Lonenberg (GP) - With all the prepatory work done, it was announced that the King Charles II School of Law in Gotzborg will be starting classes for prospective students on September 20th, 2004. Sir Robert Davis, Professor of Law and primary driver behind the Law School, announced today that any and all prospective students are now encouraged to put in their applications by September 18th with the last possible applications being accepted on September 20th.

So far the King Charles School of Law looks to be off to a good start with HSIH Mi'kel Tzion of Attera and President Thomas Kelly of Talamthom being part of the first group of students who will be attending classes, which will run for approximately 45 days from start to finish before the next intake of students is put through.

The Eagle commends Sir Robert Davis on his fine work so far and looks forwards to talking to the first group of students for their views and opinions of the course upon its completion.

In a related statement from Lonenberg Palace, His Royal Majesty the King expressed strong support for the efforts of Professor Sir Robert Davis' school. "It is our vision that sees the King Charles School of Law becoming the preeminent legal education system in the micronational sphere," His Majesty said when asked what kind of direction the School is going to take.

Judicial Act in Chamber, Law School to be Established

LONENBERG (GP) - Deputy Vice-Minister of State Sir Robert Davis's Judicial outline for the creation of a legal foundation in Gotzborg made it into the Chamber yesterday. The Bill passed through the Home Office with minimal trouble and now sits in the Chamber for consideration by Deputies.

For his outstanding work, the Deputy Vice-Minister was Knighted in an evening ceremony at Lonenberg Palace which was followed by a grand ball attended by government and court officials. "We look forward to great things from Sir Robert. His committment and service to the Kingdom thus far has been instrumental in this development," said His Majesty after the ceremony. "Coupled with his strong macronational legal education and experience, Gotzborg will be growing to become a major player in the micronational legal scene."

With the success of the Judicial outline moving to the Chamber, Sir Robert has now found himself tasked with the organization and set up of the King Charles II School of Law which when open will take successful applicants through an intensive course where students who pass will recieve a micronational legal designation whereby they will be better prepared to practice law within their own micronational structure and approach legal matters with a better understanding of the basic workings of legal systems and their importance.

New Appointments Made to Gotzborg Goverment

Here at the Gotzborg Eagle we want to congratulate M.T. Square-Makonnen and Robert Davis. Lt General Square-Makonnen has been appointed to Monister of the Office of War and Robert Davis has been appointed as Deputy Vice Minister of State Judicial Divission. here is what each had to say.

Mr. Davis said that he was very pleassed on the appointment. He originally intended to have an advisory role but on request of his majesty he was made Deputy Vice Minister.

This is what the Deputy Minister had to say.
"The future of our Legal Structure is a very difficult one to foretell. This has been my biggest challenge in developing a system. In order for the system to work properly, I must take into consideration that the Kingdom may very well grow and therefore change dramatically, that as time goes on, the desires and opinions of our Head of State may shift, and being a micronation, that there are several sections that would normally be included in such an Outline, that must be removed, or simply consolidated into other areas. I must remain fair, impartial, and balanced in the placement of Divisions, and the duties of each. I must also allow for a great degree of flexibility, so that things may change without the proverbial pulling of teeth. As one may well imagine, making law flexible is no easy task; as the very nature of law is that it be absolute and unwavering.I am looking forward to a lot of hard work, and brilliant collaborations."

On the appoitment to the Office of War this is what Lt.Gen Makonnen had to say.

" I feel that it's a great honor to be a citizen of Gotzborg first and foremost and that His Majesty, King August Charles has been a great support and patron of not only military tradition within Gotzborg, but has a fondness for the history as well, which to me, is very important. This is a major reason for my petition for citizenship here, but on a personal note, I see him as a good friend also.As far as the appointment to His Majesty's War Office, I am honored and feel that with close cooperation with the Gotzborger Crown, I will be able to bring about a more active involvement of the Gotzborg military in the Intermicronational Community. Yet, there are things here in Gotzborg that must be accomplished first before we make our presence felt elsewhere. First, there's the actual building of the "muscle" of the Gotzborger military. Right now, we have the structure, or "skeleton" of the military pretty well set, along with the outstanding design of the uniforms each of the branches will wear, but we need to get down to the "meat" of our fighting force. I along with His Majesty will be formulating the various troop levels and actual deployments of these forces throughout the nation, for an adaquate representation of Gotzborger strength, in the upcoming weeks.Of course, with the current policy of His Majesty, the King, Gotzborg's military serves an "atmospheric" function that will further enhance the Gotzborg experience, as Gotzborg does not condone the use of forum based weaponry or even agrees with the concept of "micronational warfare".One issue that I'd like to see come to fruition is a conference based on the military aspect of micronationalism, in which the Royal Kingdom of Gotzborg will host. This will have to be made in conjuction with close work with the Foreign Office, who will be responsible for informing and inviting those micronations that wish to participate. At this conference, I would like to see active discussion on various topics, such as: Forum defense techniques, Intermicronational military history and other interesting subjects our guests could bring to the table.Should this come about, I'm sure it would bring greater interest not only to Gotzborg, but to the military aspect of our hobby.The main future of the War Ministry in my eyes would be to basically show that militaries and the trappings that come with them, do have a place in micronationalism. For this hobby to be a realistic version of what's found in the Macroworld, one cannot exclude the military as viable facet of a nation and that we should embrace it as an integral part of government."

Home Office opens Justice Section

LONENBERG (GP) - The Home Office yesterday opened the Justice Section with the appointment of Mr Robert Davis as Deputy Vice-Minister of State who has been mandated with the responsibility to submit the guidelines for the creation of the Judicial and Legal processes within Gotzborg.

The Royal Kingdom was previously setting up a Joint Council with the Republic of Talamthom to evaluate the resource-sharing possibilities of a joint-judicial court, however with the recent departure of Mr Kevin Gladstone from Talamthom, the future of the Joint Council looks to be stalled and possibly dead.

While the work on the Gotzborg Judicial format continues, sources in the Home Office say that the Government would like to continue to look "for opportunities to combine resources in judicial affairs with other like-minded micronations." The Home Office spokesperson also expressed hopes that the Raspur Conference will properlly address what the Government considers an "important issue in the intrests of simplifying the playing ground and taking advantage of the teamwork inherent in the micronational community."

As Gotzborg continues to look for other micronations on whom to cooperate with judicial affairs, the Home Office clarified their position by saying "It is not just on legal matters which we are focusing either. Any other opportunity to pool talents and abilities with other micronations is something we would like to discuss and pursue. It benefits all concerned."

Change Made to the Constitution

Today an important event has occured all trough out Gotzborg. His Royal Highness the King as enacted a decree to change the constitution.

In acordance with Royal Decree 070904 the following changes have been made to the Gotzborg Constitution.

The decree grants all citizens the right and ability to sit in the Chamber and to discuss and introduce legislation as necessary to allow a democratic process to exist which was one of the original intents of the Constitution.

The King stated that the constitution was changed due to "the small citizen base". The king also stated that the changes would be revocked once the population increassed enough to sustain a democratic progress.

The Minister of Home heavily encourages people to come visit Gotzborg.
"Gotzborg is a wonderful nation that is in need of wonderful people. Please come and visit us. We have pleanty of opportunuties for new citizens. We hope to see you at Gotzborg."

From the Seven Divided Nations

Lonenberg (GP) - Yesterday evening Lonenberg Palace announced the adoption of the Kingdom's National Anthem, "From the Seven Divided Nations" which was generously written and put to music by Sir John Fondyga KE.

"His Royal Majesty was most impressed with Sir John's selfless contribution to the Kingdom," the Palace Press Office reported. "Sir John approached the Crown about the possibility of putting together an anthem based on the history of the Kingdom and the results were very worthwhile."

Both the music and words have been posted on the symbols page of the Kingdom's website, there are currently no plans to bring together the Gotzborg Symphony Orchestra to render the anthem in their own way. "I guess we will have to look at putting the GSO together before that can happen," surmises Harrison Guerin, of the Royal Fine Arts Academy.

With the adoption of the new National Anthem, the dynamic and creative Gotzborg once again rises higher as it comes to its history and depth.

New Drive for Citizens Pushes Foward

Gotzborg (GP) - Being the lifeblood of any micronation, today the King of Gotzborg launched on a renewed effort to market Gotzborg and micronations in general out to the 'mainstream' in an attempt to draw in more interested people into the otherwise backwater hobby.

"Even if people who come looking around decide to join another micronation other than Gotzborg, we still consider that a success," said His Majesty's Press Office when asked about the effort. "Obviously the first goal is to interest and have new citizens join the Kingdom, but we have greater desires to see micronationalism as a whole flourish."

The renewed efforts are being primarily directed towards online game, simulation and related forums on which there is a relation to micronationalism. "It depends on which micronationalist you talk to and what their viewpoint is of micronationalism, but we are trying to cover all aspects of what makes this an enjoyable endeavour," said Gary Exsall, from the Gotzborg Micronational Studies think-tank in Abrantes, "but what has made it so enjoyable and varied is also what's killing it. People who don't know it just dont know what to make of it when the start looking around."

There is a strong feeling of confidence throughout the Kingdom that the new efforts, as long as they may take, will be successful.

"With the leadership of His Royal Majesty and the committment and dedication of the people of Gotzbog, this is bound to be a successful venture in the end," summarized HRM's Press Office.

Tourism hopes for growth

Lonenberg (GP) - Gotzborg's tourism industry is slowly but surely on its way to growth and improvement, but whats the timeline and when will things begin to pick up?

New surveys of both Gotzborg travellers and tourism industry operators indicate both groups are expecting a busier year than previous.

Gotzborgers leisure trip numbers are expected to rise this year as well as outlooks from other micronations.

"Both of these indications give us a feeling of optimism," says John Bentbrook, managing director of Tourism Gotzborg, the joint government-industry agency that markets the Kingdom's industry.

"It is always difficult with a micronation new on the scene to show bounding growth and tourism in its first year. It takes time, marketing and gaining a certain level of presence before you start to see more visits and interaction taking place," Bentbrook conceeds.

This last four months has marked overall an increase in tourism with people from Attera making up the majority of the tourism. There have been many other one offs, citizens of other micronations stopping by to take a quick glance at things and then they are moving on. The opening of Courland Barracks Motorway in Ganden with the Micronational Motorsports League was another strong step to both marketing and drawing in tourism. "We want to bring people to Gotzborg to interact and generate a community of conversation, debate and interaction. We think Gotzborg has a lot to offer and while we understand its only a matter of time, we are working hard every day," Bentbrook concludes.

Things are looking up for the Kingdom, with the continued and necessary presence online, the interaction with others, Gotzborg is being marketed everyday and with it will come the off-shoot benefits of new citizens and more participation by all.

"There are some phenomenal years to come," surmises Bentbrook.
